Abstract
The chapter deals with frequent features of spontaneous speech. It endorses a standpoint that properties of spoken utterances are an issue of linguistic pragmatics (they are context-dependent).
There is no difference between the syntax of spoken and written communication (there is only one grammar). Phenomena observable in spontaneous speech (ellipsis, modifications by particles, contact phenomena, repetition, corrections) are not rule by nature because they cannot be predicted and enforced.
