Chronic pain and its correct treatment is still an underestimated medical discipline. The article presents modern treatment options for pain not only in the field of pharmacotherapy, but also using neurostimulation methods.
New forms of opioid analgesics, tapentadol in particular, may be used in patients demonstrating intolerance to commonly available opioids. Common and most prevalent part of the treatment of chronic non-cancer and cancer treatments are transdermal formulations of opioids.
Transmucosal fentanyl in different forms is indicated in patients with cancer pain, suffering from breakthrough pain. Neurostimulation methods are reserved for chronic pain, which are pharmacoresistant.
