The Greek and Black Sea Trade Amphorae in The Emporion Pistiros, Bulgaria

Abstract

This article is a continuation of previous work on transport amphorae recovered in Pistiros. It discusses stamps and body fragments, especially toes and rims.

Not all finds from the Septemvri museum have been documented up to date; nevertheless this collection of materials represents an organic assemblage with a definite informative value. We documented all available toes and rims whose date is bracketed by the lifetime of the emporion.

It was proven impossible to date the material with more precision on the bases of fragment morphology. As the context of the material had not been reported consistently, we focused on identification of provenance known from the amphorae stamps.

This paper presents the percentages for amphorae from different production centers in the emporion and discusses relative quantities and proveniences.
