Abstract

The paper focuses on multilingualism in the autobiography of Elias Canetti.. The multiplicity of languages plays an important role in the part devoted to the author's childhood, but also in the evocation of time shaping his artistic approach in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century.

Theme of the language is in autobiography Canetti always present and is gradually expanding, adding new levels of meaning. Multilingualism is related not only a thematic layer, but is also compositional part of an autobiography - the example of the construction of text will show how is the multiplicity of language used to achieve specific effects.

They are based on the tension between literariness and the reference status of the genre of autobiography. Canetti's case serves as a case study in theoretical view on the autobiographical narrative.
