On Animate and Inanimate Category (In relation to Czech language teaching for foreigners on the basis of Russian)

Abstract

In this paper, the author focuses on a comparative analysis of the morphological realization of animacy and inanimacy in the Czech and in Russian languages. The analysis shows that the most problematic and therefore most important part in the field is the accusative plural and problems in the course of counted objects in the position after the numerals two, three and four in the nominative and accusative.

Interference phenomena are illustrated by concrete examples of mistakes repeatedly committed by Russian-speaking students when learning the mentioned grammatical forms in the Czech language. The aim of this paper is to show a methodical approach for presenting plural paradigms of Czech declension to the target group of Russian-speaking students of the Czech language.

The article also summarizes how animacy and inanimacy is presented in Czech and Russian grammar books and how it is reflected in selected professional essays.
