The lecture deals with the significance of the oil shocks for the CMEA states and their impacts on cooperation within the block. It shows the link between the situation in soviet oil-sector, movement of the world oil prices and development of pricing mechanisms of the intra-CMEA trade.
The Author identifies several areas of intensification in mutual cooperation as a result of the oil shocks in 1973 and 1979. Shift of the terms of trade in favour of USSR brought expansion of mutual trade and strengthening of autarky of the block.
Energy sector had a priority position among the long-term goals of the CMEA cooperation. Oil shocks have reinforced even more the already started building of international pipelines, expansion of the soviet gas export and also investment collaboration between USSR, CSSR and GDR on the development of soviet energy deposits.
The flagship of cooperation within CMEA represented nuclear energy. Nevertheless, great plans as well as the central role of CSSR remained unfulfilled.
