Regular assessment of peritoneal transport characteristics during peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment is essential for several r easons. Permeability for creatinine allows to determine the basic type of peritoneal transport.
Another area of testing is related to u ltrafiltration capacity of peritoneal membrane. Using the appropriate test enables to find out the reason of ultrafiltration problem and adjus t the prescription of PD.
The third area of testing is the longitudinal follow-up of peritoneal membrane changes. These changes unevi tably occur during PD treatment.
Regular testing can detect these changes in time and prevent more serious complications. Type of tests which can be used in clinical practice are described (PET, modified PET, Mini PET, Double Mini PET).
Several clinical sit uations illustrate the use of each test and describe the diagnostic approach in some ultrafiltration disorders.
