Modern Nationalism: Surprising Component of Marxist Doctrine

Abstract

Taken the class structure of society into account it is necessary to ask to what extent was Marx able to acknowledge the different concepts of collective identity. One of the most confusing questions is the Marxist relation to nationalism oscillating between anticipated internationalist revolution and reality of European national identities.

This dilemma brings the traditional thesis of anti-national nature of Marxism into question. Hence it is reasonable to consider if there is some coherent doctrine of "Marxist nationalism" conceivable and also possible to decide whether a national identity is an acceptable principle for Marxist way of thinking.
