Communicating mathematics as a tool for improving key and mathematical competences

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2015

Abstract

The here presented paper addresses a very important issue of communication competence (one of the so called key competencies) as an integral part of education, and the potential mathematics has for its development. The authors draw attention to the fact that communication in mathematics and about mathematics is one of the tools that can support the development of key competencies but also can bring innovation and fun into mathematics classrooms.

They use the results of Le-Math project and their experience from MATHeatre and MATHFactor competitions to show that already primary school pupils are able to present selected topics from mathematics in public, can understand them and find the way appropriate for passing the message to the audience. They suggest that inclusion of similar activities into mathematics lessons will not only make mathematics more popular, but will also lead to development of pupils' key competencies, which is required in official curricular documents.
