Tiotropium bromide in the treatment of bronchial asthma

Publication |
2015

Abstract

Within two specializations, pneumology/phtiseology and allergology/immunology, we are being enriched by the possibility of new treatment of patients suffering from bronchial asthma.Tiotropium bromide, an anticholinergic drug with ultra-long effectiveness, is a new molecule to be used for long-term bronchodilator therapy in the population of adult patients with moderate to severe persistent bronchial asthma. This drug has been placed to the pharmacotherapeutic group "Other inhaler therapy of disorders associated with airway obstruction", anticholinergics, ATC code R03BB04.

According to the latest guidelines of Global Initiative for Asthma formulated in 2014 (Global Strategy for Asthma Management and Prevention) and the recent Czech recommendations for the evaluation and treatment of asthma from 2015 (consensus of two expert societies - ČPFS and ČSAKI), tiotropium bromide can be used as an alternative bronchodilator therapy. Tiotropium bromide is the only long-acting anticholinergic drug with this indication. The question remains whether other long-acting anticholinergics will make their way to the asthma therapy.
