Developing a Curriculum for Rigorous Computer Science at Czech Grammar Schools

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |

Abstract

Computer science is not a part of general education in the Czech Republic. We have carried out a larger project to help to improve this situation.

It involved development of a new introductory computer science course concept, its itereative testing and adjusting and final piloting and evaluation. Computer science turned out to be difficult, yet manageable by our students, and computer science education showed some clear benefits.

In this article we describe a part of this project, the initial curriculum development. There was no traditional and well tested approach we could rely on.

So we started with clear slate and carried out the didactic transformation of computer science for grammar school. Our approach was based on identifying fundamental ideas, such as information, model, algorithm and efficiency.

These are the foundation of the resulting curriculum. They can be studied on different age levels, they appear in various areas of computer science and they are relevant also outside of it.

We conclude with a short comment on the pilot run evaluation.
