Abstract

Professor Švambera is regarded as a founder of systematic geographical research of Šumava glacial lakes. He began field measurements at the Plešné Lake in 1903.

He continued in the years 1906-1911. The most valuable contributions are his detailed depth measurements.

He made 3,075 measurements in 79 profiles by 1912. He measured the most depths at Černé Lake, 1,019.

Their greatest density was at Čertovo Lake. He created original maps of Šumava lakes in the scale 1:1,000, which was reduced to 1:2,000 for the publishing.

He published the results in the Journal of the Czech Geographical Society (1912 and 1939) and in the Debates of the Emperor Franz Joseph Czech Academy (1913-1914). The works from his estate were published by Professor K.

Kuchař. Švambera carried out the most accurate admeasurements of the lake basins on the Czech side of Šumava in the early 20th century. The high accuracy of his measurements is confirmed by the measurements taken in the recent years by using the most modern equipment. Švambera urged his followers to repeat the measurements of Šumava lakes.

His wish was fulfilled by a group of hydrologists from the Geographical Section in Albertov led by Professor B. Janský.

They remeasured the lakes and after hundred years they topped with the number of measurements, until then unsurpassable, Švambera's data.
