Education and specialization of addiction professionals: a global survey

Abstract

Conclusion: A number of universities offer education in the field of Addiction Studies in Europe. No European university has a complex system of university education in the field of Addiction Studies, except for the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague where the programme called ""Addictology"" is running at all degree levels: bachelor, master and Ph.D.

Background: In the Czech Republic there is a complex education system in the field called ""Addictology"" (Addiction Science) running from 2005. The Czech system of services for drug users and dependent people has adopted this new specialization into its specialists system.

There is a need to analyze and compare similar study programmes in Europe and their implementation in practice. Research question: What study programmes are available at European universities for getting a specialization in Addiction studies? How do they differ from the Czech education system in this field? Methods: Systematic review.

Document analyses, website analysis. Questionnaire study about study programmes in Addiction Studies field.

Comparison study. Evaluation using descriptive statistics.

Results: There are study programmes in ""master of science/master of arts"" and postgraduate study (Ph.D.) running at different European universities. Some of them are focused on basic education in the addiction field, some are specialized in public health approaches to addiction studies.

In the Czech Republic there are specialized and complex study programmes at all levels running at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University taught by professionals from the Department for Addictology that leads to a healthcare qualification and specialization.
