Hidden Life in the Moss: a Microscopical Lesson

Abstract

This paper deals with so called bryofauna (nematodes, rotifers and water bears) and ways of their extraction. The first part depicts in short all target groups of invertebrates living in mosses, the special attention is paid to their ability to survive extreme conditions.

The second part is dedicated to the methods of extraction, namely moss wetting and the use of Baermann funnel. The paper hence provides basic advices for performance of this microscopic lesson.
