Saint John Chrysostom : Encouragments for the Persecuted

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |
2015

Abstract

The book presents translation of two John Chrysostom's works written in exile (Quod nemo laeditur and Ad eos qui scandalizati sunt) provided with a commentary and extensive introduction which consists of two chapters. The firsts one deals with John Chrysostom's life.

It focuses on the causes of his conflict in Constantinople which costed him his see and on the course of his exile. The second chapter of the introduction gives information about the dating of the translated works and their manuscript tradition, about their structure and subject matter.

It outlines two topics, which the author draws his argumentation in the second work on, i.e. incomprehensibility of God and divine providence. Finally, it presents notes about the genre of both texts and tries to take a balanced stand on this intricate question.
