Multicultural topics in mathematics education

Abstract

Multicultural education has become a must in contemporary societies. Among other, it is one of the cross curricula subjects that are compulsory at primary school level and must be addressed in all subjects across the curriculum.

Moreover, mathematics of other cultures can enrich mathematics teaching and learning. The authors of the workshop demonstrated how easily traditional teaching unit can be transformed into units with multicultural content.

The participants learned about activities that had already been piloted and had the opportunity to propose multicultural tasks useful for their own teaching. The contribution was supported by the project Socrates Comenius 2.1: M3EaL - Multiculturalism, Migration, Mathematics Education, 526333-LLP-1-2012-1-IT-COMENIUS-CMP.
