Abstract
The paper deals with the occurence of foreign languages in the Czech correspondence of Karel Havlíček. Letters from Russia and letters from confinement in Brixen are analyzed.
The letters from Russia in particular include elements from Latin, Russian and German in various functions. German is dominant in the letters from Brixen.
It is used as an integral component of Havlíček 's idiolect, as a means of semantic explanations or as testimony to conflicts with Austrian institutions.
