The volume deals with manifold intersections of the three themes in modern history-namely nation, city and identity-that belonged to key concepts in the curriculum of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree TEMA. The role of urban space in the formation and reproduction of national identities, perceptions and mappings of urban space, representations of ethnic groups and manipulation with collective memory are among the transversal themes that appear in severral individual chapters.

Consisting of case studies as well as more general chapters (on capital cities and ethnic districts), the chapters focus on modern and contemporary history (18th-21st century) and include examples that stretch geographically from America (Columbia, Mexico) to Asia (Turkey, Kazakhstan), with major focus on European countries and cities (Hungary, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Serbia, Great Britain, France). The chapters were written by a collective of younger researchers, alumni of the TEMA programme.
