Differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules

Publication

Abstract

Thyroid nodule include all thyroid lesions regardless to etiology and malign potential. Prevalence of thyroid nodules is 19-67 % in unselected population.

Prevalence of palpable nodules is 4-17 %. Vast majority of them (90-95 %) have benign etiology.

Ultrasound plays a key role in managements of thyroid nodules. On the basis of ultrasound pattern fine needle aspiration biopsy is recommended.

Subsequently, Bethesda classification provides better interpretation of cytological finding and further management.
