In implementing Directive 24/2011/EU, a very generous approach regarding access to cross-border healthcare was introduced in the Czech Republic. At present, no prior authorisation from health insurance companies is required for the reimbursement of costs by a patient for planned healthcare in another Member State.
No representative data are as yet available. However, there are some doubts whether this generosity will not destabilise the extremely tense financial equilibrium within the Czech public healthcare system, as health insurance companies can no longer control the costs (and quality) of the healthcare provided to Czech patients in other Member States.
