Abstract

The paper describes some of the characteristics of current academic writing based on examples by high school and university students. It focuses on specific phenomena which students find difficult when writing their diploma theses.

It studies the possible causes of the low level of students' works, and contrasts the situation of teaching academic writing in the Czech Republic with textual teaching in the English-speaking countries, Germany and France.
