In the first part of this article, some basic properties of Gram matrices and determinants are described in connections to the Gram-Schmidt ortogonalization process, QR-decomposition, solving overdetermined systems, theory of least squares etc. In the second part, the brief history of these questions, as well as basic information on lives and achievements of J.

Schmidt G. Kowalewski are presented.
