Various forms of Atheism around us, in us, and in Theology. Theology in Theorising Atheism

Publication at Hussite Theological Faculty |
2014

Abstract

In this study, the author follows up on a number of his previous publications which focused primarily on intellectualising atheism, and rather neglected its other forms. In its first part, the study presents an overview of the topic and postulates the basic assumptions underlying the subsequent reflection.

The next part explores attitudes which are mostly based on emotions, such as vulgar atheism, practical atheism, anti-ecclesialism, and anti-religious attitudes. The only response to these challenges is, rather understandably, a more profound return to the message of the Gospel.

The author stresses that clericalism, understood as a preference for personal interests and ambitions over the Gospel and common welfare, is something that believers in Christ must refuse. Finally, in the third part, the study discusses the way mature faith and theological reflection on the one hand and theorising atheism on the other hand somewhat overlap.

Such a form of atheism is conceivable solely on the basis of the biblical image of God, who is in relation to the world transcendental and free. The theologian and the follower of theorising atheism are certainly not enemies - they are partners in dialogue and fellow pilgrims on the way to the Inexpressible.
