Czech Taught in Texas for Hundred Years

Publication

Abstract

The article presents the history of the teaching of the Czech language in Texas at the university level: from the year 1915 at the University of Texas at Austin (founded in 1883). Immigrants from Moravia, Bohemia and Silesia began to settle in Texas from the 40th of the 19th century.

They brought their mother tongue, and culture and traditions associated with it to the new environment and from the beginning they tried to preserve and develop it carefully, even if not always easily, and without problems. They spoke Czech mostly at home and some were taught Czech at schools of different type.
