The article is devoted to the qualitative differences between cohesion (healthy proximity) and enmeshment (pathological relational phenomenon). Enmeshment was originally defned as an extreme value of cohesion but this assumption fails to research acknowledgement.
Later research fndings rather refer to mutual independence of cohesion and enmeshment. The aim of the article is to explore the relationship between enmesh- ment and cohesion.
It seems that enmeshment occurs in close relationships (insofar connection with cohesion) but it is differently motivated and relates to other phenomena in the life of the involved people: while cohesive relationships occur together with a good adaptation of partners, enmeshment is associated with a broad spectrum of problems.
