The renowned Czech writer of the 20th century Egon Hostovsky belonged to Czech writers whose work was influenced by the classics of Russian literature. During his whole life he was keeping a creative dialogue especially with F.
M. Dostoyevsky.
Already in his first novel, written at the age of nineteen, he managed to capture presciently the fundamental features of Dostoyevsky's poetics. While at the beginning of Hostovsky's writing career it is possible to talk rather about imitation, later it is primarily a spiritual kinship of both authors, who personally experienced the tragicality of human destiny and penetrated into the depths of the mind of the modern man and his existential problems.
