New reading of Wang Guowei's Renjian cihua contextualized in his early writings and translations. Unlike the prevailing view that Renjian cihua is an example of traditional Chinese impresionistic criticism, the author claims that Renjian cihua is primarily an attempt to create modern aesthetics nourished by the study of German philosophers.
The inner structure of Renjian cihua is also studied and an opinion expressed that Wang Guowei attempted at systematic exposition of his innovative theory through traditional devices systematized. The problem of reception is also touched upon.
