Facilities Aesculap Academy training centre located at the pavilion of academic Bedrna, Department of Surgery at University Hospital, Charles University in Prague became September 12, 2014 became the place of the course ""Basic principles of the skin surgery of head and neck"". Lecturers accompanied the 15 course participants through lectures, practical training of sewing techniques.
The basics of the anatomy and physiology of the skin and the issue of healing of skin wounds and physiological concept of sewing was discussed in the introduction. In the practical part the basic tools for doctors, needles and suture materials were mentioned.
Synthetic skin was used for trainees to have first try of the basic stitches. Due to the type of material used it was not necessary to use personal protective equipment.
The training covering defects by primary suture, local shifts and rotational flaps followed. The next step was surgery of the skin and subcutaneous tissue and simulated pathologies (e.g.
Fibroma, dermoid, lipoma). After performing excision of lesions followed suturing of the skin.
The program concluded case studies and lectures focused on the treatment of malignant skin tumours of the head and neck. The course was targeted primarily to the beginners and designed to be familiar with the basic procedures of the treatment of minor skin wounds.
