Abstract

The paper presents a preliminary evaluation of an amphoric assemblage discovered during excavation of the bratislava castle. Altogether, 822 fragments have been found, including 39 rims, 22 handle fragments, 12 shoulder fragments and 5 bottoms. the majority of the assemblage constitute the amphorae of the toe lamboglia 2 and its transitional variats towards the type Dressel 6A.

Apart from them, several fragments of the type Dressel 2-4 are present. One fragment might come from a knidean amphora. the assemblage is exceptional in the transalpine area becuase of its volume and composition.

Chronolgically, the assemblage may be placed roughly to the third quarter of the 1st c. BC.

The finds hint at certain historical consequences - the amphoric import and other proofs of contact with Mediterranean testify in our opinion of involvement of the Middle Danube area in the area of political interest of prominent personalities of Rome in the late Republican and Triumviral period.
