In 332 BC the Second Persian occupation of Egypt ended with the arrival of the Greek army of Alexander the Great. However, he had already conquered much of western Asia and the Levant before his triumphal liberation of Egypt.

In 331 BC, having founded the city of Alexandria and undertaking journey to the world-famous oracle of Amun in the Siwah oasis, he left Egypt to continue his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire, leaving the country in the control of Greek administration and military officials.
