Abstract
Life in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Bohemian industrial town at the linguistic frontier, was significantly influenced by the news about Sarajevo assassination and in particular by the subsequent mobilization and outbreak of war. A series of local emergency measures followed (e.g. reduction of business hours of pubs, introduction of civil night watch of firefighters, establishment of hospitals for wounded or injured soldiers, providing accommodation to Jewish refugees from Galicia).
Reduction of textile production (particularly due to the lack of raw materials) caused unemployment. Efforts to get supplies caused shortages of goods.
War censorship and economic problems had a negative impact on local press. External loyalty (e.g. celebrations of Belgrade Conquest by Austro-Hungarian Army) was partially challenged by a few contradictory signs.
From the ideological and gradually also practical point of view, the local gymnazium was affected too. Waiting for peace was yet going to take long time.
