Abstract

The chapter charts the founding and the beginning of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It explores its changing roles in domestic, foreign and cultural policy of the Czechoslovak government, its significance for the newly nationalised film industry and its position among other post-war European film festivals.

The chapter also touches upon the interests of the Soviet Union and the role of the festival in the global cultural agenda of the Soviet film industry.
