The Architecture of the Last Two Rosenbergs in a European Context

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The contribution focuses on several issues that were important for the architecture of the last two Rosenbergs, especially Wilhelm of Rosenberg (Vilém z Rožmberka) (1532-1592) - i.e. his acquaintance with Italian Renaissance architecture and town planning during the tour of Italy by the Czech nobility in 1551-1552; and furthermore on the mediation of knowledge of Renaissance architecture through the theoretical works of Sebastiano Serlio, in particular his Seventh book. The first edition of this work (1575) was in fact dedicated to Wilhelm, although not by the author himself (who died in 1555), but by the antiquarian Jacopo Strada (1507-1588), who had bought the manuscript from Serlio.

Attention will also be given to the Český Krumlov residence itself and touch on the difficult issue of how to approach the Renaissance "general modification" of the medieval castle. The article also reflects on the question of the influence on the shaping of the Krumlov estate and gardens by the construction activities of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529-1595) in Innsbruck and Ambras.

The conclusion takes note of the example of use of a number of patterns from Serlio's Seventh book for the Budějovice Gate in Český Krumlov.
