Monuments as an Expression of Loyalty? : Monuments to Czech Germans in the 19th Century

Abstract

A monument in the 19thCentury represents a searching as well as confirmation of national and political identity. The German population of Czech lands created its "pantheon" of 'all-German' figures (Schiller, Körner, Bismarck), of figures who integrated the Czech-German population (Joseph II., Hans Kudlich) or figures of only local or regional importance.

The author follows the activities of Czech-Germans in the field of monuments-building between 1875 and 1914, is interested in motivation of these activities and their signifikance for the national coherence.
