How the world is given marks a starting point in the works of French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas. Starting point insofar as from his earliest works these writings find their motivation in questioning for the condition of Man in the world to this world.
I want to present two seemingly dichotomic starting points - firstly, the imprisonment in total being ("Sein"),and secondly, the fragmenting of the world in parts. The first point forms the motivation for Levinas' work "De l'évasion" from 1935, the second one for " De l'Existence a l'Existent" (From Existence to Existents).
The concern of this presentation is to confront the motivation of these writings, maybe the most important of his eralier works, with eath other. This analysis will show that already in early Levinas one can find possibilies outside of the dichotomy from part and whole.
