This chapter presents an overview of the general principles of the rule of law as well as its protection. Th e chapter fi rst defi nes the rule of law as a product of an advanced, civilized society.
It then continues to present a general concept of the rule of law, while also placing it within the context of European law- the rule of law is a concept of a primarily procedural nature, which is enshrined within the values of the EU. The chapter ends with a discourse on whether once established standards of the rule of law could be lowered and whether European law provides for a system of sanctions for the protection of the rule of law.
