Abstract
An attempt to introduce memory and experience of organismal lineages, and their communities, into the evolutionary drama. In the light of all of life being taken for a semiotic category, the exceptional status of humans must be discussed.
It is seen in their capacity to create - thanks to language - virtual umwelten of narrativity, objective reality and transcendence.
