Lipids, hypolipidemic therapy and diabetic ocular complications

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus increases the risk of ocular complications. Diabetic retinopathy is a direct consequence of hyperglycemia.

In patients with type 2 diabetes in its development also involved in other cardiovascular risk factors. Investigating the possibility of influencing the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy treatment of lipid-lowering drugs.

Statins reduce the risk of cataracts. Prevention and treatment of ocular complications of diabetes should be based on interdisciplinary collaboration.
