Damage to the gastrointestinal tract is quite common in patients with diabetes mellitus and it is a significant problem, which can lead to decreased quality of life and complications with compensation of diabetes. From the clinical point of view, diabetic autonomic neuropathy can manifest in impaired motility of the oesophagus, diabetic gastroparesis, diabetic enteropathy or faecal incontinence.
It is always necessary to exclude other possible aetiology of symptoms. Therapy should be focused on the optimal control of diabetes and on control of symptoms.
