Polish women workers in Czechoslovakia: What made them to come?

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2011

Abstract

The article studies the system of a guest labor in the Communist Czechoslovakia with particular attention paid to the Polish female workers. The aim of the article is to analyze reasons and motivations of the Poles for taking jobs in Czechoslovakia.

The main argument is that neither higher wages nor the wish to immigrate to Czechoslovakia for good plaid the most significant role. Therefore, other motivations are studied, such as escaping from social control of the conservative Polish rural areas or to obtain scarce commodities which were absent in Polish consumer market.
