Abstract

The study analyses the problem of research on John Huss. From the Czech scientific environment the author points out the work of historian Šmahel, which is worthy mainly because that in the time affected by questioning of individual verified research results it reliably summarizes what are the outcomes of the research on John Huss that have been reached in last two centuries and what shall be necessary to follow.

The author states that previous research has been confessionally affected and the most dividing issue in that regard is considered to be Huss's work on the church. The opinions of Jan Sedlák and Matthew Spinka shall be submitted to re-evaluation since the ecumenical process, through which Huss's legacy has gone in last decades, convincingly indicates that it is necessary to research especially into the theological legacy of John Huss.

The crucial point regarding that question was the statement made by Pope John Paul II in the course of Rome symposium on Huss, when he described Huss as a personality that belongs among the reformers of the church. The author considers important that Huss becomes the subject of dialogue again and that questions linked mainly to eschatology are subject to re-thinking.

At the same time he proves that Huss might not be interpreted without thorough new evaluation of his theological stands. He postulates new brave approach to Huss theology, which is a key to his whole philosophical thinking and social reflection as well.
