A Limping Pilgrim: The Use of Questionnaire In Pedagogical Research

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2016

Abstract

Attempts to strengthen the position of field didactics lead to increasing demands on researches in this field. Lately, pedagogical research has been promoted especially thanks to the qualitative research.

Traditional quantitative research is supplemented with qualitative research and also combined design as effective tools for description of intricate school structure, schooling and education. This paper is focused on still the most common data collection method - questionnaires.

The paper is penetrated by results of a Ph.D.-theses research analysis defended between 2004 and 2014. Questionnaires dominate also in data selection methods used in these theses, although they are not always an optimal method and not always well-constructed.

Questionnaire survey is seemingly an easier method, however, its use means the need to consider its convenience with respect to the surveyed phenomenon, sample selection and size and also in data interpretation. The main goal of this paper is to discourage beginning researches from using a questionnaire as the only data collection method, recommend using standardised questionnaires from already conducted researches and also consider combined design, i.e. complete a questionnaire with another method of data collection, typically interview or observation.

Only then will the research in Chemistry education leaned on questionnaire not lag behind.
