World Anti-Doping Agency WADA included meldonium into so called monitoring program in 2015. In September 2015 WADA announced main changes in the list of prohibited doping substances, valid from January 1, 2016.
Meldonium was newly included into the list. Despite of that, several cases since the beginning of the year were found, when meldonium during doping control was positively diagnosed.
Positive finding in Russian top-class tennis player Maria Sharapova met the highest publicity. All athletes found guilty for the anti-doping rule violation can expect strict sanction - being suspended for competitive activity maybe even for OG in Rio de Janeiro.
