Called to Become a Blessing: The Story of Abraham's Vocation and Public Mission

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2015

Abstract

The study presents basic motifs of Abram's vocation (Gen 12:1-3) in the context of the book of Genesis and sketches their impact on subsequent religious traditions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). It was originally prepared for an international interdisciplinary conference focused on the current debate about the concept and tasks of the Public Theology.

It deals with one of the classical Biblical passages about "mission" (the archetypal story of Abram's vocation, Gen 12:1-3). The author critically evaluates the intention and message of this influential text, with a particular interest in the positive function of the notion of "Abrahamic commission" to become a blessing/benefit for others.

An essential feature of the study is its attention to the Jewish, Christian and Islamic receptions of this particular text which have fundamentally shaped European civilization and culture..
