The article is focused on the role which played brothers Josef and Hermenegild Jireček in the successful transformation of the Cracow Scientific Society into the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow in 1870-1872. Historian of literature Josef Jireček (1825-1888) and historian of law Hermengild Jireček (1827-1909) worked as councilors in the Ministry of Religion and Education in Vienna; Josef Jireček even held the position of the minister in the government of Karl Hohenwarth in 1871.

The article is based on the private correspondence between both Jirečeks, duke Jerzy Lubomirski and Catholic priest Václav Štulc.
