Klotho is a single-pass transmembrane protein with a long extracellular part which may be released into the blood. Its clinical significance is extensively studied.
Circulating levels of alpha-klotho in dialysis patients are low. Vitamin D may increase klotho gene expression.
The relation between serum vitamin D concentrations and serum soluble klotho is not known. We aimed to study novel markers of bone and mineral metabolism, including soluble alpha-klotho, in vitamin D deficient haemodialysis (HD) patients, and to assess whether correction of vitamin D deficit is associated with any changes in these markers.
Especially, we focused on the relation between soluble klotho and vitamin D metabolites.
