The Limes Romanus changed in the Late Antiquity. One of the main changes was the nature of the control of the rivers Danube and Rhine.

New type of fortification has appeared: the fortified landing places. Those fortifications were unique cases in Roman military architecture, because they were enclosed only from three sides and were open to the river.

In this paper I will focus on their architecture and their function as places connecting the river banks, protecting of river traffic and places responsible for separation of Roman and barbaric world.
