Abstract

Paradigmatics of Verbal-Nominal Forms (With Regard to Teaching Czech for Foreigners): Paradigmatic verbal-nominal forms, i.e. the forms of the active and passive participle, verbal nouns and verbal adjectives are to be considered on the basis of their endings a part of the declension system of nouns and adjectives. During their derivation the verbs and names are put into context that can help the students to better understand the Czech language as a whole.

The simplified system of four declension paradigms to which we are accustomed from the textbooks of Czech for foreigners becomes at higher levels of language acquisition insufficient. Its expansion for the needs of regular derivation of the verbal nominal forms is being introduced in the paper.

Inductive reasoning for deriving the above mentioned forms, which is based on several examples, develops from the study of relevant vocabulary in the grammar books, in the retrograde database of the Institute of the Czech Language and in the Czech National Corpus. The study, among other things, deals with linguo-didactic description of the consonantal alternations that accompany the formation of the particular passive participles as well as verbal nouns.

It also monitors the actual occurrence of the given alternating forms in the contemporary Czech language. Among the selected verbal nouns there is a group of prefix derivatives being examined.

Online language tools can be used not only in creating teaching materials but also as a learning supplement itself.
