New Guideline on management of patients with diabetes and advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage G3b or higher (The Guideline) was published in the spring of 2015. The Guideline was prepared under the auspices of the European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA), which was represented by the guideline development group of European Renal Best Practice (ERBP).
The full text has been published in the journal Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation and it is accessible online free of charge - for example, in the Medline database. The following text is a short extract of the Guideline and it is intended for expert community to be used as a source of new information and also as a guide for solving diagnostic and treatment process of acute and unclear cases of kidney diseases of patients with diabetes.
In addition to a habitual rigorous approach to the methodology and evaluation of available information this article offers many practical advices which are important for everyday routine care of diabetic patients. This article also highlights the conclusions which are important from the perspective of patient s prognosis.
The guideline is divided into three main chapters regarding the treatment of patients with diabetes and CKD stage 3b or higher: i/ issues related to renal replacement modality selection, ii/ issues related to glycaemic control, iii/ issues related to management of cardiovascular risk.
