The Czechoslovak Republic experienced very difficult times of its history in the period between the Munich Conference in September 1938 and the end ofthe Second WorldWar in May 1945. First it had lost part of the part of its territory, then ceased to exist and eventually was fully occupied.
Not only publishers, authors, booksellers but also the entire book market had to deal with this difficult time period. It started with a ban on publishing of certain books, genres, historical and scientific titles, a ban on publishing of works of both domestic and foreign authors, lifting the numer of copies, allocation of paper, over the appointment of "new" people who supervised and dictated the editoval plan.
This had created a gradual production dechne which strongly restricted the business of publishers and forced many of them to close it. Many publishers and booksellers who participated in resistence activities lost thein lives.
